Backend Developer Intern

Role Overview

HelpSeeker is looking for a full-time (minimum 30 hours/week) Backend Developer Intern to join our growing company. As a team player, you will bring your keen eye for detail and problem-solving skills to the Innovation team. Your experience in Agile frameworks and supporting platform development will make you the ideal Back End Developer. 

This is a remote position – work from home anywhere in Canada.

The internship commences October 1, 2021, and ends March 31, 2022. There may be an opportunity to transition to a permanent position once the internship has been completed.

This position is being hired through the Digital Skills for Youth (DS4Y) Program 

To qualify as an Intern for this role, you must:

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Be a post-secondary graduate (not mandatory for candidates living in the Yukon, North West Territories, and Nunavut)
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada and is legally entitled to work
  • Self-assess as underemployed – meaning that you are employed below your level of education, are unemployed or hold part-time employment

When you join HelpSeeker you will:

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain our backend infrastructure and develop features in a service-oriented approach.
  • Identify, develop, and support RESTful API endpoints in an Agile SCRUM environment.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to understand and develop product features.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, ensuring scalability, etc.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for new code repositories and work with other developers to have a unified CI/CD approach.
  • Build and support the infrastructure required for decision support systems, expert systems and form-based systems, working with subject matter experts and UI/UX designers.
  • Work with stakeholders including to assist with development-related technical issues and needs.
  • Work with internal teams to ensure maximum usability and organization of our technology.
  • Create and maintain datasets from a variety of sources (public/private, internal/external).

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in a Software Developer role
  • Degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Information Systems or equivalent experience
  • Experience with server-side frameworks (e.g. .NET) and DevOps technologies (CI/CD pipelines, Containers, Automated Testing)
  • Experience working with frontend and backend development teams
  • Experience working in an Agile SCRUM Environment and familiarity with SCRUM ceremonies
  • Proven history of working effectively with product managers, scrum masters, and scrum teams
  • Excellent knowledge of test methodologies and technologies
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
  • Communicates blockers and scope effectively with peers and leaders
  • Familiarity with automated integrated testing in CI/CD pipelines is an asset
  • Experience with Decision Support Systems is an asset
  • Experience working in the social sector is an asset
  • Familiarity with data pipelines is an asset
  • Experience with cloud hosting platforms such as Microsoft Azure (e.g. Azure Web Apps, Azure Functions, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, etc) is an asset
